Adopting and fostering with Second Chance Spaniel Rescue

Find out how adoption works, view our current adoption fees and learn how fostering helps spaniels in need.

All of our dogs listed for adoption have detailed write-ups to help you understand whether they may be a good fit for your family. It’s really important to read the full write-up as well as look at the photos.

Each dog’s profile includes a link to their individual application form.

Please complete a separate application form for each dog you wish to apply for. The questions are tailored to each dog, which is why we ask for individual forms.

If you haven’t heard from us within 7 days, please assume your application has not been successful on this occasion. Please don’t be discouraged as each dog has individual needs, and you may be the perfect match for another.

If shortlisted, you will be invited to undertake a homecheck. This may be in person or virtual, and we ask that all members of the household are present.

If selected, you will then be invited to a meet and greet with the dog. Again, all members of the household, including resident dogs, must attend. We recommend two meetings where possible to ensure the dog is the right fit. We understand this isn’t always easy due to distance, but where possible we encourage either a second meeting or taking some time after the first meeting, perhaps over lunch or a coffee, to reflect before taking your new dog home.

Support is available to you after adoption, so you can reach out to us at any time.

Fostering With Second Chance Spaniel Rescue

All dogs available for adoption have already been fully assessed in foster prior to being listed. Fostering is a rewarding process for those who may not be ready to commit to adoption, and it’s worth noting that in our model, a very high proportion of our fosterers choose to adopt their foster dog. If the match is right for both dog and fosterer, you will always have first opportunity to adopt.

If you are interested in fostering, please complete our foster application form. You only need to complete this once. If suitable, you will be homechecked and added to our foster network.

To foster, you will need:

Children aged 8+, or older depending on the dog
To not be away from home for more than 4 hours a day
Experience owning spaniels or associated gundog breeds
No holidays planned in the next 8 weeks

Fostering is a wonderful opportunity to help dogs, but it’s important to remember that some dogs arrive quite stressed or unsettled. Fosterers should have time to devote to training, providing security, boundaries and confidence.

Lifetime Fostering

Lifetime fostering offers a wonderful opportunity to provide a loving home for a dog in need while receiving ongoing support from Second Chance Spaniel Rescue. Unlike adoption, the dog remains under the ownership of the rescue, allowing us to continue supporting both you and the dog throughout their life.

Many dogs suitable for lifetime fostering are older, have ongoing medical needs, or require additional support that may make finding a traditional adoptive home more challenging. Through our lifetime fostering programme, these dogs can enjoy the comfort, stability and companionship of a family home while remaining under the care of the rescue.

As a lifetime foster carer, you provide the day-to-day love, care and security that every dog deserves. In return, SCSR remains involved and can assist with agreed veterinary treatment and ongoing support, helping to ensure the dog receives the care they need throughout their life.

The bond that develops between a lifetime foster carer and their dog is often no different from that of any family pet. Many carers tell us that knowing they have given a vulnerable dog a second chance brings enormous satisfaction and purpose.

Lifetime fostering is a truly rewarding way to help. It gives dogs who may otherwise struggle to find a permanent home the opportunity to thrive, while enabling the rescue to continue helping more spaniels in need.

By opening your home to a lifetime foster dog, you can make a lasting difference to a dog's life while gaining a loyal companion in return.
