Fostering

Interested in fostering?

All our dogs needing foster homes are posted onto our main Facebook group which you will need to request to join to learn about fostering opportunities.

Fosterers are the vital stepping stone for relinquished dogs - without foster homes we can not take dogs who are being relinquished.

All vet bills for our foster dogs are covered by Second Chance Spaniel Rescue.

We are especially interested in hearing from experienced dog owners (better able to manage lesser behaviour who are interested in fostering, but please don’t let that put you off if you have had the perfect dog. Fostering is hugely rewarding in so many ways.

If you feel that you are able to offer a dog a temporary home and are prepared to assess the dog (temperament, behaviour, character, triggers etc) whilst with you, then this is the process you’ll need to follow:

  1. When a dog is posted as needing a foster home, please comment on the post that you’d like to be considered. Please mention if you are already homechecked by us as that could speed up the foster.

  2. A member of the team will then contact you.

  3. If you haven't had a homecheck, a virtual homecheck may be carried out. If you have had a homecheck we will then refer back to our files to see if your home suits the foster dog.

  4. Providing all goes well, a Foster Contract will be sent to you which you will need to read, agreed, sign and returned before you can foster a dog.

  5. Arrangements will be made between the owner, the team and yourself for collection of the dog. A member of the team may collect the dog, or we may request the fosterer to collect on our behalf. But we will ensure that all the relevant paperwork has been done from ours/the owners side before collection.

  6. The dog is collected and taken into foster care.

  7. The Fosterer will be provided with a Buddy from the admin team and the fosterer will be required to provide regular updates on the dogs progress.

  8. Once the fosterer has had the dog for a minimum of 3 weeks they will prepare a written assessment on the dog. If the dog needs more time then this report will be delayed accordingly.
